Peter Murphy is a freelance photographer based in New York and New Jersey specializing in people and environments. His work has appeared in publications such as Time, Wired, Scientific American, and The New York Times among others.
When his dream of becoming a spy was crushed by some short-sighted, small minded people at the CIA, he decided to pursue his runner-up career choice - photography. He became the assistant to legendary photographer Jay Maisel and was often found sweeping the corner of Bowery & Spring Street on the lower east side of Manhattan. There, he saw the most atrocious things ever to exit a human body - but he was also frequently flying around the world while learning from a true icon in the world of photography.
He launched his own career shooting portraits for magazines and has received awards from Communication Arts, Nikon, and numerous Art Directors Clubs. In 2018 he received ASMP's award for the best editorial photography of the year.
He resides with his family in rural New Jersey and when he's not taking pictures he's raising honey bees or renovating an old house.
